The Besançon University Hospital is composed
of two parts:
• The
Saint-Jacques University Hospital,
in dowtown Besançon. This hospital was
built in 1686, and originally housed a religious
community before later becoming a hospital. It
served as a resting point along the pilgrimage
route to Santiago de Compostella in Spain, from
which the hospital's name was derived. The religious
origins of the hospital can still be seen today
in the "Chapelle du Refuge" [Chapel
of Refuge] which forms an integral part of the
hospital's main building.
